Literature Text

In the bleak midwinter frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow
In the bleak midwinter long ago

Holly loved the darkness, Oak preferred the light
Holly scared the sun away, each day a longer night
So the people shuddered, in the dark and cold
In the bleak midwinter, where our story's told

Holly King was ruling, Oak was but a child
But in his heart was passion, his sword was wielded wild
Holly was more skilful, but smugness cost him dear
Oak got in a lucky blow, just below the ear

Thus our Goddess crowned him, took him as her King
Then Oak brought back the Sun to us and this is why I sing
So decorate a Yew tree, to honour him each year
And he will bring us presents, clad in his Santa gear.
